Tinctures are considered one the most effective form of herbal medicine because it dissolves directly into the lining of the mouth and stomach which dissolves it directly into the bloodstream. You'll want to use a tincture for more immediate results as opposed to something like a tea which could take months to get into the bloodstream, assuming you're really good at drinking it consistently 4-6 times a day for at least 6 months to a year straight.
When making a tincture, you will need:
-Mason Jar
-Herbs of your choice (Make sure you know what you are concocting together and why)
-80 proof vodka
Formula and instructions:
-No matter what size your mason jar is, the formula will always generally be the same- it is more so about the equivalent than it is about actual measurement.
Step 1: Fill your mason jar 2/3-1/5 of the way full with your herbs. It is important to know which herb is the base herb and which ones are complimentary to said herb because this will determine how much of each to add to the jar. You may also add them in equal parts, but I suggest you learn more about primary herbs vs. complimentary herbs so that you achieve a more balanced tincture.
Step 2: Fill the rest of the jar with an 80 Proof (40% ABV) Alcohol- I suggest Vodka because it is essentially flavorless and does not contain extra sugars, however this is based on preference (Tequila, Whiskey, Gin, Rum, etc.) - The alcohol will extract the medicinal properties from the herbs and lower is alcoholic content in the process
Step 3: Let sit for 6-8 Weeks (you can go longer than 8 weeks, but not less than 6 weeks. Try not to go longer than 12 weeks), Make sure to store it in a cool, dark area and shake every few days to ensure that all of the herbs are being thoroughly and properly extracted.
Step 4: Strain the contents with a strainer or cheese cloth and store in an Amber Glass bottle. Keep in a cool, dark place for up to a couple years or until it has evaporated from the bottle. We love tinctures because of their storage life- they essentially last forever because the alcohol creates a sterile environment, meaning it wont mold or grow bacteria. The alcohol may dissolve after a couple years if the tincture isn't used very often.
Hope this helps! Happy Healing!
